Yoga

Yoga remains a difficult issue to discuss in this century. Globalization seems to have a devastating impact on this ancient concept. Most people choose to describe yoga as a simple concept rather than a complex philosophy in order to help people understand better. The contents of yoga are exceptionally intricate and thus westerners may find it hard to understand. It can be disastrous to assume a fake understanding of such a complicated subject and spreading it as the absolute truth. Westerners often view yoga as a physical activity. The rich philosophies behind yoga practice have been reduced into a simple form of art that focuses merely on achieving inner balance and peace.

In reality, yoga practice is a very sacred journey that has roots buried deep within the scriptures of an ancient Holy book. In the faraway land of India, it is recognized as a spiritual practice that includes a series of complex and systematic physical moves. The westerner’s viewpoint that yoga is a physical activity is very wrong and distorted. The strange symbols related to the yoga practice have created some awareness among the westerners that there is more to yoga than the physical aspects, but they are often misunderstood. Operating from the wrong paradigm, yoga became a form of sports in the western world. It also does a good job attracting those who wish to obtain inner peace and balance in the midst of the hectic modern lifestyle. The allure of yoga as an effective way to gain inner peace and balance has beckoned many to embrace this activity as well.

This perception is often strengthened by the various claims made by the so called yoga masters. Outside of India, that there is a high level of misunderstanding of its true nature, hence the monumental amount of mistakes that can be found in its implementation. A closer look revealed that these errors were caused by the cultural influence of each race. The western busy lifestyles certainly do not provide much space to contemplate on this philosophy. While meditation is an integral part of the practice, the westerners with their ever busy lifestyles certainly do not posses time for such luxuries. The principle of Hinduism that governs the yoga practice does not recognize the greed for power and wealth, which is obviously a value of prime importance in the western world. Perhaps the western man shall never reach the peaks of wisdom according to the parameters set by the Hindu religion and culture. One needs to possess both time and patience to fully reap the rewards of a successful meditative session. The westerners do not place a high degree of importance in the attainment of philosophical wisdom, as it does for the accumulation of massive wealth and gaining power.

Here, yoga as been practiced by those who desire to look good and stay in style. There is a lot of information going out promoting yoga as a form of sports. In fact you can grab any of those and start practicing yoga anywhere you want to. Even fake gurus have support from their adoring disciples. Obedient disciples of this distorted form of yoga have become agents of growth of this unhealthy philosophy.
